Harsh R. Pandya
Harsh R. Pandya is a social scientist with extensive experience, both academic and applied, in developing automated, data-driven methods to evaluate and act on information to counter terrorism, insurgency, and threat finance. As an innovator at Giant Oak, Harsh is at the forefront of building artificial intelligence tools with intuitive user interfaces for the advancement of security, with particular focus on the financial sector. In the past, Harsh has provided subject matter expertise to US Government agencies on bias and censorship issues in large-scale data analysis for military operations, the effective use of non-traditional data sources for remote feedback from conflict zones, and sourcing leads for threat finance and money laundering investigations. In 2011-2012, Harsh deployed to International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan to exploit and build tools to process and analyze diverse, large-scale data sets with applications at DoD, Treasury, DEA, and other agencies. During that time, Harsh led a team of computer scientists, mathematicians, social scientists, and subject matter experts. In his management role at Giant Oak, Harsh leads commercial technology sales and partnerships.
In addition to his work at Giant Oak, Harsh is an Adjunct Professor at the Center for Security Studies at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. Harsh studies the causes and effects of political violence -- in particular, organized crime as a precursor to state-building and the micro-economics of development in the shadow of coercion and violent conflict. Harsh teaches data science and causal inference workshops for graduate students. He also has experience teaching game theory, econometrics, political violence, and international relations. Harsh is especially passionate about teaching a generation of policymakers to become formidable consumers of and contributors to data science for peace and security. Harsh volunteers the rest of his time mentoring children and young adults in his role as Co-Director for Youth Activities for BAPS North America.
Harsh has earned a Masters degree in Politics from New York University, a Masters degree in Security Studies from Georgetown University, and a Bachelors degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. Harsh was a PhD Candidate in Politics at New York University before he transitioned to industry.
