Name: Harsh R. Pandya
Title: Social Scientist
When did you join Giant Oak: February 2010. I was Giant Oak's first employee!
What are you working on: Currently, I apply machine learning models to massive financial data sets to detect suspicious behaviors.
Tell me something about the work you do: In the past, I've provided subject matter expertise to US Government agencies on censorship and bias issues in large-scale data analysis for military operations, the effective use of non-traditional data sources for remote feedback from conflict zones, and sourcing leads for threat finance and money laundering investigations. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to distill complex scientific concepts into common sense insights.
Why did you come to Giant Oak: While I was standing by for offers from other agencies, Giant Oak had already sent complex and meaningful security challenges my way, gave me unparalleled access to thought leaders and real-world data, let me consult at DARPA, put me in front of 4-star generals, and was ready to deploy me to a war zone. It was a no-brainer.
What do you do when you aren't at work: When I'm not at work at Giant Oak, I'm at work on my dissertation. I travel extensively and sometimes impulsively run ridiculous endurance races. I volunteer the rest of my time as Co-Director of Youth Activities for BAPS North America.
Prior work experience: I was instrumental in recruiting the first cohort of graduate students and professors for a groundbreaking science and technology institution with a massive endowment.
Education: I received a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree and Master of Arts in Security Studies in 2009 from Georgetown University. I started by PhD in Politics at New York University in 2012 and am on track to complete my dissertation in 2017.
